This
website is
not really
about
woodturning.
When
I
began
making turned objects, I had already developed a vocabulary of marks
with other media, having spent years pursuing painting, drawing,
printmaking and collage. For me the problem was to apply my ongoing
painterly concerns in a new medium - wood. Doing that
presented a lot of challenges.
I
wanted to
bring gesture into the work.
I needed solutions for a lot of
practical woodworking problems in order to create the type of turned
objects shown here. And as it turned out the lathe doesn't
figure prominently in the process. You can see that small
pieces
of wood are fitted together, but what that really represents is a lot
of
different machinery, throughout the workshop, and a trial and
error strategy that evolved into the current process.
That's why
I think of this approach as more assemblage
than woodturning.
In fact these vessels don't
need to be turned at all.
They could just as easily be sanded into final form.
In the following pages I will attempt to cover the highlights of my
working method with a series of photographs and a minimum of
text. I would encourage your reactions, insights, and
concerns.
The world
wide web of communication offers every artist the chance to reach more
people in more ways than ever before in history. More than the
'chance', it really challenges each of us to share our own special
insights, and talents. To this end, this page is committed.
And
so...
